One can think that music is a universal language. In fact there is not a unique universal Music but a lot of various musics with their own rules, their own habits and their own repertoire.
人们可以认为音乐是一种无国界的语言。其实不存在一种形式的音乐，它有很多种形式。每一种都有它的规则，它的习惯和它的保留曲目。
Monsieur Bellasen raconte dans son livre : « Au revoir la Chine », une anecdote sur l’insensibilité des chinois à la musique occidentale dans les années 70 (en l’occurrence Beethoven).
Mr Bellasen in his book : « Goodbye China » tells a story about the insensibility of Chinese to the beauty of occidental classical music in the 70’s (Beethoven in this case).

几天以后的一个晚上，大概九点钟的样子，我到我的邻居张同学那儿：
——“晚上好!不好意思打扰你，但是只打扰一会儿。我只想让你听听一盘磁带，这是西方古典音乐，我希望你能告诉我，是否喜欢这种音乐，它让你想到什么?”
——“没问题!”
——“这是贝多芬的音乐，第六交响曲”，我补充说明。
——“谁?不认识。” 我让他听了贝多芬的田园交响曲。两分钟以后，我好奇地观察他的反应，很着急地问：
——“怎么样，你喜欢吗?”他只回答了一句话，完全出乎我的意料：
——“我听不懂。” 我再一次表示，我想知道的只是这种音乐是否合他的口味，可是他还是同样的回答。没办法，我只好告辞。然后去敲对面宿舍的门，这里住着另一个姓张的中国学生。
——“进来吧，我睡觉很晚，而且常常睡不好。因为满脑子都是巴尔扎克小说里的人物：欧也妮•葛朗台，高老头……” 我抓住机会让他听点西方古典音乐，放松一下。 他接受了建议，准备好参与我的游戏。一段(田园)之 后，我问他同样的问题，他不假思索地回答：
——“我不太懂这段音乐的意思……” 随后几天，我重复着这个游戏。可是，答案好像没有丝毫的变化。
Un soir quelques jours plus tard, vers 9 heures, je vais voir mon camarade Zhang :
——“Bonsoir ! Excuses-moi de te déranger, mais ce ne sera pas long. Je voulais juste te faire écouter cette bande magnétique, c’est de la musique classique occidentale, j’aimerais que tu me dises si tu aimes ou non, quel effet cela te fait ? ”
——“pas de problèmes!”
——“C’est de la musique de Beethoven, la sixième symphonie”，ajoutai-je.
——“Qui ça? Connais pas.” Je lui laissais écouter la symphonie pastorale de Beethoven.
Au bout de quelques minutes, j’examinais avec curiosité sa réaction, je lui demandais anxieusement :
——“Alors，tu aimes?”. Il ne répondit qu’une phrase qui sortait complètement de mes attentes.
——“Je ne comprend pas。”Je lui reformulais la question, ce que je voudrais savoir c’est seulement si cette sorte de musique est à ton goût, mais je n’obtins que le même genre de réponse. Rien à faire, je n’avais plus qu’à prendre congé. Ensuite je frappais à la porte du dortoir d’en face, il y avait là un autre élève chinois qui s’appelait Zhang.
——“Entrez, Je me couche tard, et de plus je ne dort pas bien. Parce que j’ai la tête rempli des personnages des romans de Balzac : Eugénie Grandet, le père Goriot … ”. Je saisi l’opportunité pour lui faire écouter la symphonie pastorale de Beethoven, pour le relaxer un peu. Il accepte ma proposition, et entre dans mon jeu. Un mouvement de pastorale plus tard, je lui pose la même question, il me répond spontanément :
——“Je ne comprend pas bien le sens de cette musique …” Quelques jours plus tard je répétais l’expérience. Mais, la réponse n’avait pas changé d’un iota.
Some days later, one evening at about 9, I went to see my classmate Zhang.
——“Good evening, excuse me to bother you, it would not be long. I’ll just want to ask you to listen to this magnetic tape, it is western classical music, I would like you to tell me if you like it or not, how it impressed you?”
——“OK!”
——“This is Beethoven’s sixth symphony” I added.
——“Who? I have never heard of.” I let him listen to the Beethoven’s pastoral.
Shortly after, I keenly looked at his reaction, and I anxiously asked him:
——“So, did you like it”. He gave me a totally unexpected answer:
——“I do not understand”. I reformulated the question, I just wanted to know if you like it but I got the same answer. No way, I had better to leave. Then I knocked at the opposite dormitory’s door, there were another classmate also called Zhang.”
——“Come in, I go to bed late, I do not sleep well. I have the head stuffed with Balzac’s characters: Eugenie Grandet, old Goriot…” I seize the opportunity to let him listen to Beethoven’s pastoral, as an excuse to relax him. He accepted my proposal to play the game.
One pastoral’s movement later, I asked him the same question, he spontaneously answered:
——“I do not quite understand this kind of music.” Some days later I repeated the experiment but the answer was always the same.
Le jésuite Jean-Joseph-Marie Amiot deux siècles plus tôt avait noté la même réaction vis-à-vis de la musique de Rameau.

I had some knowledge of music, I played the flute and the harpsichord; I used those talents to be welcome.
In various opportunities during my first stay in Beijing I tried to convince my audience that our music was better than the local one. Further more, they were educated people able to compare and to judge; first class people who honoured the French missionaries with their benevolence, they often come to their home to discuss about chinese arts and sciences.
The Savage, the Cyclops, the most beautiful sonata, the melodious flutes airs by Blavet, nothing made any impression on the Chinese people. I saw on their face only coldness and indifference which expressed to me that my music did not move them. I asked them how they found my music and urge them to answer sincerely. They said very politely that “Our music was not made for their ears, and their ears were not made for our music, so it was not surprising that they did not fell the beauty of our music as they felt the beauty of their music.”
One doctor among the so called Han-lin who was serving the emperor added the airs of their music passed from their ears to their heart, and from their heart to their soul. We feel them, we understand them; the ones you have just played did not produce this impression.
我会一点儿吹笛，弹古钢琴。我用这些小技术为了他们欢迎我。
我在北京逗留最初几年，每当有不同的机会我都试着征服我的听众认为西方音乐比他们的音乐好听。并且这都是有教养的人才能对照出来和想像得到；头等重要的人们尊敬法国的传教士，他们经常去他们的家跟他们聊中国的艺术和科学。
最好听的Rameau的古钢琴奏鸣曲，Blavet的笛曲都对中国人没留下印象。我看他们冷淡的面容表示我没感动他们。我问他们觉得我们的音乐怎么样，请他们告诉我他们的感受。他们礼貌地回答：《我们的曲子和他们的耳朵不合适，他们的耳朵和我们的曲子也不合适，难怪他们感觉不出这种音乐的美妙和他们的音乐同样美妙》。
一位服侍皇帝的叫翰林的博士，说一句他们的音乐从耳朵到心通过心又到精神。我们能够感觉得到。你们的音乐没产生这个效果。
